Milan Malpensa airport

Malpensa sits northwest of Milan, beyond Varese, just under fifty kilometers from the center. It’s the farthest of the three airports that carry the city’s name, but it’s also the only one with a railway station beneath the terminals, and that changes everything: the transfer takes a little over half an hour and costs €15.

Where it is

The airport has two terminals, connected to each other by a free shuttle. Terminal 1 is the main one, Terminal 2 is dedicated to easyJet flights. Beneath each of them, one level down, is the railway station: you take the elevator down and you’re on the platform, without stepping outside and without shuttles.

Getting to the center by train

The Malpensa Express is Trenord’s service and costs €15 each way to or from any station in Milan. Children between 4 and 13 pay €7.50, and children under 3 travel free with a paying adult. The €25 return ticket can only be bought online and is valid for 30 days, with three date changes allowed on the return.

There are two lines, and the difference matters.

The RE54 is the fastest, and Cadorna gives you the interchange with the M1 and M2. The RE51 goes through Porta Garibaldi, where the journey takes 41 minutes and is direct, with no changes. There are 34 departures a day between Terminal 1 and Porta Garibaldi, the first leaving the airport at 5:43 a.m. and the last at 10:43 p.m. Since December 2025 the train also stops at Milano Domodossola, which connects to the M5.

Getting to the center by bus

The buses leave from the forecourt in front of arrivals and arrive on via Sammartini, alongside Milano Centrale station. There are four operators — Autostradale, Terravision, Flibco and FlixBus — and at peak times, counting all of them together, one leaves every 15-20 minutes.

The journey takes between 50 and 70 minutes depending on traffic, and the ticket costs between €4-5 bought online in advance and €13 bought at the stop. Some services also stop at Lampugnano, Lotto and around the Fiera.

Taxi

A taxi has a flat fare of €114 between Malpensa and Milan, set by the city council, and that figure covers everything: there are no surcharges for luggage, for night-time travel or for the number of passengers. The journey takes 50-60 minutes, so you gain nothing over the train.

It makes sense in three cases: when there are four of you and the bill gets split, when you land after the trains have stopped, and when you have luggage that turns metro stairs into a problem.

If you land at night

The last train leaves at 10:43 p.m. The buses run longer, with last departures between 11:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. depending on the operator and the terminal, and after those the only option is the €114 taxi. If you land after midnight without a transfer booked, that’s what you pay.

Timetables change with the season and the last departure isn’t always the same: if your flight arrives late, check the Malpensa Express timetable before counting on the train.

If you’re staying in Isola

From Malpensa the neighborhood is the best case in all of Milan: 41 minutes on a direct train to Porta Garibaldi, which is the station inside Isola, and the underpass toward via Pepe that brings you out onto the street without leaving the station.
